Who is this class for?

ragbag family band is for families of elementary school kids who want to incorporate musical instruments into their family musical culture. The emphasis will be on learning to explore instrument play as a part of a musical culture that also includes singing, large movement, game play and story telling. We will learn in a community environment, and will not lose sight of the fact that music should be a joyful experience that brings people together to express themselves and enjoy one another’s company.

I’m a parent. Will I be participating or just watching?

Parents will participate in the class. In fact, much of what we will do in class will be aimed at giving parents the skills to teach and encourage instrument play at home (even if you haven’t had any instrument experience yourself–really!) and to assess which instrument family your child is drawn to and when they seem ready for more “formal” study. The playful tone of the class should serve to equalize the roles of adults and children, making us all learners and players.

I’d love to take the class, but I have a younger child that needs care during class time. What are my options?

Please indicate on the registration form if you have a younger child who needs care during the class. If there is enough demand, we may arrange for a trusted childcare provider at the class to keep younger siblings engaged during the class. This is a great option, as they will hear and learn what we are doing in class.

I’d love to take the class, but I’d rather leave my child at home. Is that possible?

Contact me if you’re a parent or teacher who would like to take the class without a child in attendance. We can most likely make it work.

Will there be make-up classes?

Each family will be allowed to attend on an alternate day during the same week, twice per class session.

Can I register on a drop-in basis?

No. Families must commit to the eight-week session. It will go by quickly!

Can I schedule a trial class?

Yes! Send us a message through the Contact form and we’ll arrange a date other than the first day of class

I’m interested, but the time doesn’t work with my schedule. What are my options?

If there is popular demand for the class, there is a possibility that other classes will be added on different days. Let us know if you have a preference.
